Carly Motors Team succeeds in first ETCC mission.
Tom Coronel leads the independents Trophy.
In the first round of the FIA European Touringcar Championship at the "Circuit de Catalunya" in Spain, the Carly Motors Team achieved the goal it has set; finishing in the top 10 and collecting points in the Independents Trophy. Team-owner Carly Pellinkhof was satisfied with the result: "I think we did a great job. The new car that Duncan Huisman raced performed as expected throughout the whole weekend and Tom scored points. A successful weekend afterall".
After the qualification session on Saturday Tom and Duncan started from the 10 and 15th position. Knowing that the starting-grid for race 2 is the reversed finishing order of race 1 for the first 8 positions, a place on the first row at the start of race 2 was possible.
After a good start, Tom came out of the first corner on the 8th position. Tom: "I had a great start and was very satisfied with the car. Knowing that finishing 8th in race 1 means pole in race 2, I had to overtake Colciago".
Duncan Huisman, racing the new BMW 320i, started the race from 15th position. "A little bit disappointing but considering the fact that the car is only a little more than a week old and had its first run last Monday, Duncan got the best out of the current setup" said Carly Pellinkhof. For Duncan the first race ended in a clash with the Volvo of Rydell in lap 9 while fighting for the 9th position. "I could get alongside Rydell by outbreaking him. Side by side we went through the corner were I left him enough space but he wasn't able to avoid a clash and I ended up in the wall with a damaged car".
In the last lap of race 1, Tom set his mind carefully on P8. "I could already overtake Colciago earlier in the race, but couldn't keep that position. Strange, since he didn't seem to be very strong at that section. With only 2 laps to go I kept some distance because I already knew his weaknesses. In the last corner I could finally overtake him, finishing 8th.
After a break of 15 minutes, Tom started race 2 from pole position while Duncan couldn't start because of the clash with Rydell. "I was fast, but not fast enough to stay in front of the whole field. The car seems to get better after a few laps. It performs well on used tyres. Finishing in front of Garcia was important to finish first in the Independents Trophy. Tom succeeded in that and calls the team mission "accomplished".
