Weather: Warm, overcast
Top Qualifying started with big disappointment for Keke Rosberg, whose car didn't start and prevented him from doing his qualification lap. The fight for pole position was decided by Nicola Larini, who succeeded in finishing his lap 3/100th of a second faster than Kurt Thiim.
8 - Nicola Larini (1:40.81): "I'm quite happy. I made one little mistake at the slow corner, which may have cost a 10th of a second. But the car is fantastic and I'm looking forward to getting back in the lead in the ITC again."
6 - Kurt Thiim (1:40.84): "I could have gained pole, but I was too fast in the first corner and had to lift the throttle. This did cost me at least 2/10th of a second. What a shame. In the middle part of the track the four wheel driven cars have got a grip advantage, that's why we are losing a lot of time in this part. But still I'm in the first row of the grid, so, with a good start I might take the lead before we've passed the first corner."
26 - Giancarlo Fisichella (1:40.96) did enjoy himself very much after he had finished his lap: "I'm very happy. 3rd is a great position to be, particularly as this is my first top three qualifying in ITC. The car has a good balance, but it is hard on the tyres here and I try a new set-up in the morning, which I hope will be good for the race."
1 - Klaus Ludwig (1:41.18): "I've lost it all in the uphill chicane, when I was accelerating too late. The greatest part of the lap was nearly perfect, and so I said to myself: `Keep cool, man, do the rest of the lap as good as you started it.þ But I just should have raced on instead of talking to myself."
18 - Stefano Modena (1:41.26) made the biggest jump from his Friday position to his position after Top Qualifying: "I was using the gear cut-off and it operated twice without my advice. I think I lost half a second because of this, but otherwise it was a good lap. Nevertheless I'd never expected such a good position in the grid after this lap."
14 - Bernd Schneider (1:41.42) did his lap with the heaviest car in the field (42 kilos handicap), nevertheless the ITC leader wasn't satisfied with his 6th position: "My car's grip was fantastic, and I'm really angry, that I didn't make the best of it. As well there was some oil in the fast right, which cost me a little time. Okay, pole wouldn't have been possible, but a better time anyway."
19 - Michael Bartels (1:41.64/9th) was satisfied by his car but not by his lap: "I made three big errors and touched the curbs three times. This did cost me quite a lot but still I see good chances for the races, as my car is in a good condition."
9 - Manuel Reuter (1:42.16) felt frustration with his 11th position: "I had a strong understeer although we hadn't changed anything on the car. I don't know why. So I had expected a high '41 time, but when I realized my 1:42.16 disappointment struck me."
17 - Ellen Lohr (1:42.90/13th) was very angry with herself: "I nearly went off at the first corner. Disastrous. What more can I say? This was another Flop Qualifying lap by Ellen Lohr."
