Champion Collard Wins Season Final; Von Gartzen Runner Up

Estoril. Emmanuel Collard from France ended his 1996 Porsche Pirelli SuperCup season impressively with yet another pole position, fastest race lap and win. The 25 year old pilot of the JMB Competition team took the lead in the second lap, pulling away from his competitors to take his fifth victory. Collard had already secured his champion status four weeks ago at the penultimate round in Belgium. Porsche have invited the Champion of the international Porsche marques cup to test drive the new 911 GT1. Collard was pleased with his success: "My aim was to win this round, and at every race to climb the podium. I've done that and I'm thrilled."

With a second placing in today's race, Jurgen von Gartzen (D, Oberbayern Motorsport) easily secured the runner-up title. With six podium finishes and strong performances, the German remained consistently at the top. Team mate Patrick Huisman (NL) chased von Gartzen hard, ending his race and the series in third place. Last year's champion, Jean-Pierre Malcher (Larbre Competition) had less luck. An electrical fault hindered the Frechman in yesterday's qualifying. His seventh place in the race relegated his overall rankings to fourth. Fourth today was student Oliver Mathai (D, Manthey Racing) who, after his first season, earned an overall fifth, making him the best newcomer of the year. Horst Farnbacher (D,Zepter Racing) also joined the top pack of the season final. Second fastest in qualifying, the Porsche specialist started the 16 lap sprint from sixth on the grid. During the race the Bavarian fought off attacks from RTL-VIP driver Jacques Laffite, romping home fifth. With a fourth in qualifying and fifth in race, Jacques Laffite was the fastest RTL-VIP driver of the year. Stefan Johansson in the second RTL backed Porsche with starting number two crossed the finish line 12th. The Indy Car pilot commented on his race: "This just wasn't my weekend. I spun, missed gears and obviously need more practice in the 911. Jacques had the '94 season under his belt, but it was terrific fun - they sure fight hard here."
