Free practice sessions 1 + 2
Weather: Warm, overcast
The fastest man of the morning was Mercedes-driver Kurt Thiim (Team Zakspeed), who achieved a 1:40.41-lap in session one, while Klaus Ludwig (Opel Calibra/Team Rosberg) topped session two in 1:40.71. Altogether two promising sessions, as Alfa, Mercedes and Opel all achieved top five positions.
7 - Alessandro Nannini with the second fastet time of the morning proved, that Alfa is back on the way to success: "It helped a lot, that we did some testing yesterday. As well the track seems to be quite good for our cars. However the new weight limit isn't very helpful for me, as the car is still 25 kilos overweight."
6 - Kurt Thiim: "We worked very hard yesterday and were succesful in finding a good set-up for this track. So the car is very well balanced now and offers the possibility to be fast and save tyres at the same time."
1 - Klaus Ludwig: "As I already had had a long run yesterday, I wasn't too angry that I couldn't go out in session 1 because of engine problems. And, I really impressed myself by doing my fastest lap on race tyres. So I'm quite content. Although the Calibra seems to be in a better shape than me, as I'm sweating and the car isn't!"
4 - Jan Magnussen was rather happy with his 1:41.26 lap: "I'm pretty pleased really. Everyone is fighting with tyres, as on this circuit they are finished in 15 to 18 laps - so we have to think long and hard about tyre choice. My leg is no problem, but now I've got used to left foot braking, I think, I will stay with it."
15 - Dario Franchitti achieved 1:41.66 (tenth position after the two sessions) and wasn't too happy with his performance: "Interesting, it was a bit of an adventue out there. We have a few problems with the extra weight and finding a set-up has been difficult. I also had problems with the exhaust breaking, but at least it sounded nice in the car."
19 - Michael Bartels (1:41.42) was the 4th fastest of session two and 8th fastest altogether: "The set-up still isn't perfect, but rather promising nevertheless. Now the most important thing is to make the right tyre choice. I've never driven here before, but now I can tell you, that this is a demanding track for tyres and driver."
11 - Christian Danner, who tried hard but couldn't achive a better time than 1:42.46 was really frustrated: "The car is still totally undrivable. We have got serious balance problems, we've changed everything except for the car itself and its still there. Perhaps its time that we look for something else."
