Brackley, UK, Monday 2nd July 2001: The key ingredients for a top sports car race - competitive racing, exciting cars and world class drivers - will assemble at Circuito do Estoril over the weekend of 14/15 July, to do battle in the third round of the European Le Mans Series. The grid boasts some of the world's best sports cars and an international line-up of drivers eager to be let loose on the Portuguese circuit for 1000km of nail biting action.
The 'on-track' action starts on Friday 13 July with an ELMS test session between 14:00-16:00. The real battle begins on Saturday after the Honda BPI Junior Cup. After a combined qualifying practice for all European Le Mans Series entries at 09:10, the cars return to the track to fight for supremacy in the official timed qualifying. Starting at 11:45, with the Le Mans Prototypes taking to the track at 12:30 to compete for pole position in Sunday's race.
Entrance tickets provide access to the grandstand throughout the race weekend. The ELMS motto, 'For the Fans - Para Todos', means that unlike Formula 1, there will be an open paddock on Friday and Saturday, and a chance to meet up with four times Le Mans winner and Sportscar legend, Henri Pescarolo and his team, see the Gulf sponsored Audi R8, and the brand new high performance Saleen S7. An autograph session with all of the ELMS drivers will be held at 2pm on Saturday, so meeting the likes of ex-Formula One Ferrari driver Stefan Johansson, Franz Konrad and BAR test-driver Patrick Lemarie is a real possibility.
An early morning pitwalk will take place on Sunday between 8.30am and 10am offering an opportunity to see the cars at close quarters as final race preparation takes place in the team garages. As the cars join the grid for 1000km of endurance action, spectators can choose one of the numerous excellent viewing spots around the circuit to watch the impressive rolling start.
The 1000km endurance race will start on Sunday 15th July, at 11:00. For ticket information contact Circuito do Estoril on (+351) 21 460 9513.
