Third free practice session
Weather: Warm, overcast
The big surprise of the session was ITC leader Bernd Schneider. With his 42 kilos handicap aboard his Mercedes nobody would have expected him to be fastest. But not only did he do the fastest lap (1:40.17) of all the weekend, but also lots of other laps nearly as fast as this one.
14 - Bernd Schneider: "We analyzed everything yesterday evening, and it seems as if we made the right decisions. we didn't do any dramatic change, but lot of small detail improvements."
18 - Stefano Modena (1:40.54) was the third fastest of the session, one of his best practice results this year. Nevertheless he wasn't too happy: "The ideas, we had yesterday to improve the engine, work. But they don't work as good, as I had hoped them to do."
6 - Kurt Thiim (1:40.66) was only 4th fastest in this session after his fastest lap of Friday's qualifying, but the Dane wasn't worried at all: "I did a long run for tomorrow's second race, we wanted to know how the car is behaving with only a semi filled tank. We were thinking about doing race two on very soft tyres, but after this long run I think, we are going to decide on the safer side."
19 - Michael Bartels' (1:40.72) Alfa Romeo didn't work as the German had hoped: "I'm not satisfied. There was an air problem in my pneumatic system which took us some time to solve. Afterwards I could do some more laps, but I wasn't too satisfied with the car. So there still is some work to do."
15 - Dario Franchitti (1:40.95) showed some signs of despondency although he made some progress in the session: "It was better than yesterday, but I don't know why. There was a problem with the pumps or something, anyway, the power steering wasn't working properly, nor were the roll bars - they kept ending up in the wrong positions. We should be able to go faster."
1 - Klaus Ludwig (1:40.96) didn't go very fast but felt rather confident after the session: "We went out on used tyres - Top Qualifyijng conditions. This worked out well and we did some progress in the balance. Without the traffic in my fast lap a 1:40.40 would have been possible."
2 - Keke Rosberg (1:41.46) still suffered from a brake problem: "The car is still jumping, when I start braking, and still we don't know how to solve this problem. But look - I have improved. Yesterday I was 15th, now I conquered 13th position."
20 - JJ Lehto (1:42.00) was still an unhappy man after the session, but still kept on thinking positive: "I'm losing a second per round and still don't know, if it s caused by a lack of balance, grip or something else. I only know, that I'm losing the time in the corners. But who knows: Now we have to wait and see, what Top Qualifying will bring."
12 - Michele Alboreto (1:42.07) showed some slight signs of optimism: "We are doing some progress - step by step. And I see a possibility to finish both races."
10 - Yannick Dalmas again couldn't do as many laps as he had liked to do: "I only could do three laps, then my hydraulic system broke again. So I couldn't work on the set-up. What can I do?"
