A close fight between the international and local Danish drivers is in sight, when this year's edition of the Danish Touringcar Challenge kicks off at the Jyllands-Ring on May 7th. On Wednesday most of the DTC field was gathered at the Danish circuit for the second public test day of the year, and it showed that the local Danish drivers will be giving their international countrymen a fight for their money. The two "Michaels" with the surnames of Schröter and Carlsen showed their usual form, when they record the second and third best times respectively in their Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 306 GTI right behind Jan Magnussen. The former Stewart Grand Prix driver tested for two of the Peugeot teams present in this year's Danish Touringcar Challenge, and his performance showed that the Lion cars are very competitive. In the importer supported Peugeot Sport Team's newly built Peugeot 406 Coupé Magnussen posted best time of the day, while he recorded fourth best time in one of Team Brask Racing's Peugeot 306s, which is identical to the privateer 306 that Magnussen will be making his DTC debut with on May 7th. Defending champion Jesper Sylvest had his first run in the brand new Citroën Xsara Coupé VTS that he is going to race this year. Even though the car was far from finished, and thus tested without its proper rear suspension, Sylvest nevertheless managed to end up being ninth fastest with a time that was less than a second slower than Magnussen's best. Among this year's newcomers Klaus Madsen and Mike Legarth put up extraordinary performances. Klaus Madsen, a former Citroën Saxo Cup winner, got quite close to Magnussen's time in his identical Team Brask Peugeot, while Legarth put in a very strong showing in his rear-wheel drive BMW 320i. In the Swedish Volvo camp there was plenty of optimism, even though Kent Bo Steffensen and Jørgen Poulsen only recorded times as 11th and 15th in their pair of Volvo S40s, which have been heavily revised during the winter period. "We are very satisfied following today's test," explains a smiling Kent Bo Steffensen. "It has been far easier to get used to the new gearbox, but despite the fact that we are still a second or so behind the fastest man today, we are still optimistic, as we have been testing on old tyres all day long."
Less happy was John Nielsen. His McDonald's Nissan Primera only managed to complete a few laps, before the former Le Mans winner had to park it with a broken gearbox. The test day was far worse for Allan Bjerregaard, as his Ford Focus broke a front axle, while fellow Fordster Jesper Villumsen had to stop early, when his engine started losing oil. <pre> Result of the test day at the Jyllands-Ring for Dansk Touringcar Challenge:
