Weather: Sunny, warm
Just as they did in the morning session the two silver AMG Mercedes' . dominated timed qualifying But Bernd Schneider turned the tables on his. team-mate Dario Franchitti to set the fastest time .
Bernd Schneider (Mercedes): 1st. "The set-up of the car was better than I thought this morning. Nevertheless we still have to work on the handling before tomorrow's Top Qualifying session."
Dario Franchitti (Mercedes): 2nd. "I'm quite happy with the car but there are still a few things we have to change. We'll discuss it in the debriefing and decide what to do."
Kurt Thiim (Mercedes): 3rd. "I'm still not too happy but if we can use what we learned in the session this afternoon, then we have a really good chance to be fastest tomorrow."
Klaus Ludwig (Opel): 4th. The highest placed Opel driver in the field. "If the temperatures stay high I think we will be in a good position against the Mercedes in the races. I didn't press so hard today so I'm pleased with the position."
Jorg van Ommen (Mercedes): 5th. "I wasn't happy with my lap. There was more grip at the end of the session but I stayed in the pits because I didn't want to risk my tyres."
Michael Bartels (Alfa Romeo): 6th. "We tried the car with the ground effect underbody again this afternoon but, just like this morning, it was quicker without it."
Manuel Reuter (Opel): 7th. "We changed a lot on the car, trying to replace understeer with oversteer. However, for some reason we had even more understeer, and the tyre temperatures were 20 Degrees Centigrade lower than they should have been,"
Stefano Modena (Alfa Romeo): 8th. "The car is not so bad for one lap but there is an inconsistency in its handling. I can't repeat the times from one lap to another."
Nicola Larini (Alfa Romeo): 12th. "I had problems with the ABS brakes in both untimed sessions this morning. As a result I haven't had much time on the track to work with the car's handling. I've got a Step 2 car this weekend and it takes more set-up work. But I've got time tomorrow morning and I think that if the weather stays hot we should be OK in the race."
Yannick Dalmas (Opel): 14th. "I'm quite frustrated because the car is very difficult to drive. It doesn't have any grip or balance. What's worse, we don't know why. But I'm an experienced racing driver, I have to think about the problem and find a solution. I think I can do that."
Sandy Grau (Mercedes): 15th. "I'm losing time in the fast corners and I don't know why. It's really frustrating."
JJ Lehto (Opel): 22nd. Only completed one lap due to gearbox problems. Alessandro Nannini (Alfa Romeo): 23rd. Crashed at Craner Curves on first flying lap.
