Race 2 - 25 laps

Schneider again led away at the rolling start with Franchitti slotting into second. The Mercedes duo quickly pulled clear of the field and, as the race entered its second stage, Franchitti closed on his team-mate. They started the final lap only half a second apart but, under orders from his team, Franchitti didn't try to pass his team-mate and Schneider held on to win his second race of the day.

A fantastic start from Stefano Modena brought him into third place, ahead of Thiim, van Ommen, Grau and Fisichella. Thiim tried to pass Modena on lap nine but slid wide, allowing van Ommen through into fourth. The German soon passed Modena when the Italian began to suffer gear selection problems, slipping down the field to finish 13th.

Behind Thiim came Grau. He held off Fisichella in the early race battle, the pair swapping positions on the first lap but the Italian crashed out on lap 11. Manuel Reuter moved up to finish seventh with Uwe Alzen, Bernd Maylander, Christian Danner (the best Alfa Romeo driver) and Ellen Lohr completing the top 10. Lohr drove exceptionally well having started from the pit lane.

Nicola Larini charged from the back of the field in his Alfa Romeo and had a wonderful battle with JJ Lehto's Opel. The Finn just held-off Larini to the finish, taking 11th place. Keke Rosberg was out of luck in his Opel, the former F1 world champion crashing spectacularly on lap 15, while Michael Bartels retired his Alfa Romeo following engine failure.

Bernd Schneider: "The car was good at the start but the handling went off as the race went on. That allowed Dario to close right onto my tail."

Dario Franchitti: "I was pulling-in Bernd but the team told me to take it easy. I'm OK with that because I've always said that I would do all I could to help his push for the title."

Kurt Thiim: "I tried very hard to pass Modena early in the race but slid wide and he went by me again. Then I saw Jorg in my mirrors and, as we have a policy not to block each other, he went through. That was it."

Jorg van Ommen: "The car was good in the second race. I was able to pass Kurt and closed a little bit on the two guys in front. I'm very pleased,"

Klaus Ludwig: "I knew from the start of the race that I wasn't going to make a good impression. Eventually the fuel pressure just fell. I switched pumps but the car stopped."

Nicola Larini: "I had a good battle with Lehto but in the end the problem was not with the car or with the tyres - it was me. I just wasn't motivated enough today."
