QUALIFYING - RACE 2
Saturday, June 7, 1997
#8 DAVID DONOHUE - set another new track record to capture the pole for the second race with a time of 1:29.049/84.897, beating the time of 1:30.887/83.180 that he posted yesterday. The top five qualifiers were quicker than Donohue's pole time for the first race.
#8 DAVID DONOHUE (PacWest Dodge) - "Being out front to start both races is a big advantage. With the level of competition here, starting up front in our Dodge Stratus is important. It is really great to be on the pole fo both races."
#7 DOMINIC DOBSON (PPG Dodge) - "The only way today's repeat could be sweeter is if I were on the pole with the PPG Dodge. With the Hondas and Randy Pobst getting their set up down, starting on the front row will be important. We'll have to work hard to keep everyone behind us. I'm happy to have the two Dodges out front."
#4 NEIL CROMPTON (Tasman Motorsports) - "We made good progress from one day to the next, but the Dodge guys also made improvements. We're also suffering a little from new chum's syndrome, we just need to get bit better handle on the circuit, but we made a lot of improvement."
#1 RANDY POBST (T.C. Kline Racing) - "I think the CEC BMW has the potential to be up front, but our speed is about as fast as it will go right now. I'm happy with how I drove the car, but I am unhappy with how the car is behaving. The car is not turning the way it needs to be."
#42 PETER CUNNINGHAM - "We picked up a good bit of time in today's qualifying. The car felt a lot better, but I still have a lot to learn about this track. We have a few things we'd like to improve on by tomorrow."
