Young drivers led the race, Ford team captured double wins
The 2nd race of China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) started on 28th June and Changan Ford Racing Team was definitely a star of the weekend. After a very successful qualifying on Saturday, the team got off to a good start on Sunday and managed to lead the race for more than 30 laps. In the end, Andy Yan won the race. Lo Kai Fai (team 778) finished 2nd and Rainey He captured 3rd. Tengyi Jiang was the 5th and Changan Ford Racing team was the team winner of 2000cc class.
The temperature was very high on Sunday afternoon and a 39-lap race was a tough test to every driver. The 2000cc starting grid featured 2 Ford Focus cars on the 1st row, one on the 3rd and one on the 5th. It was a very favorable start for the team.
The drivers performed even better than the scheduled strategy: Rainey He took the left side of the track and led the race; Pole-sitter Martin Cao had some contact with Billy Zeng's car, yet managed to follow his teammate and stayed stay 2nd. Andy Yan started very well and went up to 3rd. Thanks to this exceptionally good start, three cars of the Ford team led the race for more than 30 laps. Tengyi Jiang, on the other hand, moved up gradually.
The major change happened in the last 7 laps: Ford team Andy Yan overtook his teammates He and Cao and moved up to lead the race. Lo Kai Fai followed Cao & He very aggressively and overtook them eventually. Andy Yan, Lo Kai Fai and Rainey He won 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. The in-car temperature was over 60 and the youngest driver Martin Cao's body had dehydrated with the heat and went off the track in the last lap. Tengyi Jiang did a good job by starting from 10th and finishing 5th. Andy Yan impressed everyone with his steady performance and he set another CTCC record by winning the race as a total new comer.
Yan said: "Changan Ford Racing team is a very strong team and FRD is a very professional team. Although the team had limited time to prepare a new car for me, but it performed really well this week. I saw real team work in this team. The weather is a tough test for us and I am glad I overcame it and won the race in the end. I am very happy about the result."
Rainey He, the lead driver of the team, indicated that he was impressed by Yan's performance. "I have three new teammates this year and I learnt a lot from them and it feels great. I will have to spend more time in the gym to prepare myself better for tough races like this."
