ST-EUSTACHE, QC - Don Munroe put himself back in contention for the Toyota Canada Superbike Championship with a victory in Saturday's qualifying heat for the Suzuki Superbike Challenge at Autodrome St-Eustache.

The Bedford, NS rider took his Kawasaki ZX-7RR to a narrow victory over the Kawasaki ZX-9R of Don Mills, ON's Michael Taylor to claim pole position for tomorrow's feature race and claim his second Star Choice Pole Position Award of the year.

The win also gave Munroe 10 points toward the Toyota Canada Superbike Championship. He is now in a tie with St-Jerome, QC's Benoit Pilon for second place in the standings at 141 points, 15 behind series leader Jordan Szoke.

Szoke fell on the warm-up lap for the heat race and had to start from the back of the grid. The Brantford, ON rider finished 18th on his Kawasaki ZX-6R and gained no points in the title race.

Munroe led all 10 laps of the Superbike heat, but faced a late challenge from Taylor, who closed to within a second of the defending series champion at the finish.

"Mike is very fast here so I wanted to get a good start and make him chase me," said Munroe. "I was getting tired near the end and I knew he was coming. I just tried to go as hard as I could. Hopefully, I can do the same tomorrow."

Munroe completed the race in eight minutes, 1.808 seconds for an average speed of 134.49 km/h around the 1.8 km Autodrome St-Eustache.

Neil Jenkins of Kitchener, ON finished third on a Suzuki GSX-R750. Toronto's Kevin Graham, on the Canadian Tire/Coca-Cola/Star Choice Yamaha R1, and the R1 of Pilon, completed the top five finishers.

In other action at St-Eustache, Francis Martin of North Hatley, QC led start-to-finish on his Honda CBR900RR to take the victory in the six-lap qualifying heat for International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Open Sport Bike. Woodbridge, ON's Frank Trombino was second on a Yamaha YZF R1 and Graham placed third.

Munroe won the six-lap qualifying heat for the Yoshimura 600 Sport Bike class on his Kawasaki ZX-6R. He passed Szoke halfway around the first lap and pulled away for an easy four-second victory.

Jeff Williams of Kingston, ON placed second on a Honda CBR600F3 and Szoke was third.

Feature races for all three national classes will be held Sunday starting at 12:45 pm.
