NICK WITTMER AND LOMBARDI HONDA RACING EARN FIRST CANADIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP
ICAR Complex, Mirabel, September 8th, 2009 -- The last double header of the Canadian Touring Car Championship was held last weekend at the ICAR Complex north of Montreal and Nick Wittmer in the Lombardi Honda Racing Civic became the first Quebec driver to win the overall title and the Super Touring class. Already leading the standings after the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, Wittmer needed a pair of seventh places to lock the title. He started on the second row in the first round and nursed his car to fifth overall. Strategy prevailed on Sunday again when he kept his #06 Civic out of trouble to end up fourth overall at the stripe. Wittmer was honoured at the season ending banquet held at the racing facility on Sunday night. Title was hard fought for Wittmer whose sole victory was strangely denied earlier in the season. Nevertheless, his crew gave him outstanding racing material race after race and the 24-year old collected enough points in the 16-round calendar to top the standings.
"This championship is a tribute to Lombardi Honda Racing, cheered loudly Nick Wittmer. "Our Civic was built with original and production parts and claims to be one true touring class racing car. The crew always gave me a machine that could fight for a podium. We raced all season against more powerful competition -- which explains our lack of victories -- but the reliability of the car and the work of our team prevailed. I have to thank Tony Lombardi for his trust in me and for putting such a wonderful team together."
"Nick Wittmer proved to be a very mature driver this year", mentioned Tony Lombardi. "When you have to deal with such powerful competition, it is very easy to loose your composure and take chances. On the contrary, Nick kept his cool and used his marvellous driving skills to put our Civic in the best possible place in every race. This is the first Super Touring Championship for our team and it will bear a very special place among the awards we collected over. It is also an acknowledgment for the group of guys who worked so hard all season."
In its fourth season in the Canadian Touring Championship, Lombardi Honda Racing Team earns its first overall title after 16 rounds over 6 different tracks. The team has become famous in the past for its numerous victories and titles in the Honda series. Tony Lombardi, his drivers Nick Wittmer, Kuno Wittmer and Jean-Francois Dumoulin will celebrate for the time being and will make their 2010 racing future known in due time.
