Renault Sport Clio Elf International Cup 2003
Ready for the show
Just like in the Trophy championship, one name is dominating the standings and the races for the time being: Rangoni. Michael (well, well!) would definitely seem to be made of the same stuff as his brother, but behind him the battle is fierce and the chasing pack is close.
Creeping up on the Italian ace are drivers from Belgium, The Netherlands, Portugal, Italy and France, meaning there's still everything to play for. Two weeks ago at Enna Pergusa, Ciro and Scieghi reigned in the runaway lead of the young prodigy. With no points on the board in Sicily, Rangoni fully intends to get things back on track again.
The overall standings are closer. Lemeret, who had a great race at Enna, is now only 14 points behind the leader, with the firey Magalhaes taking the wheel again after sitting out the last race. The Portuguese driver, currently 24 points back from the top but from one race fewer, will be one to watch here at Brno. But while Magalhaes enjoyed a storming start to the season, another driver has since taken over the reigns: Van den Berg. Since his win at Barcelona, he came away empty-handed at Magny-Cours, only to re- gain confidence - and 12 points - at Enna Pergusa. So there are still plenty of hopefuls looking to take the title, and Rangoni is going to have his work cut out if he wants to keep his top spot. Muhlenz and Bartyan (9th and 10th overall) are lying in wait, whereas Eychenne (6th) is relying on consistent results to disturb the leaders' plans.
Without wanting to jump the gun, it would seem after three races that a hierarchy is beginning to take shape. But no one's in any doubt that on Brno's wide track, anything can happen! Especially a spectacular show, which is what the Clio Cup has been treating us to since the start of the season! Let's hope it lasts!
