June 12, 2003 (Toronto, Canada): Andrew Bordin will drive the "Be Anything with Barbie at Wal-Mart" car in the third round of the 2003 Canadian Formula Ford Championship at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Bordin is filling in for regular driver Ashley Taws who continues to recuperate from injuries incurred in a traffic accident in December.
Bordin, who was the series Champion in 1995 before going on to compete in US Formula 2000 and Formula Atlantic, is coming out of retirement to race this weekend.
"I'm looking forward to racing again," said Bordin who is a partner in AIM Autosport, the team that fields Taws's Barbie car. "I'm pleased to help out Ashley while she recovers and hope that she'll soon be back in the car showing us what a talented racer she is."
In previous races this year, Taws's 2002 team mate, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin drove the Barbie car. He finished sixth at Mosport after a last-lap gearbox malfunction took him out of a battle for the lead, then finished second at Lime Rock Park.
Taws, who has worked remarkably hard to bounce back from her injuries, intends to race at the Trois Rivieres Grand Prix in August. Her original plan to race at the Toronto Indy in July had to be shelved following her final surgery at the end of May.
"I was all set to race in Toronto," said the nineteen-year-old who claimed pole for last year's race, "But, the recovery from the last operation took longer than expected and did not leave me enough time to get ready."
Taws will be in Montreal throughout the weekend to participate in promotional events, cheer on Bordin and watch the Formula One race on Sunday afternoon.
This weekend's Formula Ford race is scheduled to begin at 2:30pm Saturday afternoon, with qualifying sessions at 2:15pm and 4:00pm Friday.
