Porsche Michelin Supercup, third round at the Spanish Grand Prix
First win for Alessandro Zampedri - Patrick Huisman takes points lead
With a light to flag win at the second points' round of the Porsche Michelin Supercup on the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona (Spain), Italian Alessandro Zampedri secured his first Supercup victory. Taking up the 14 lap sprint from pole position Zampedri successfully held off his team mate Patrick Huisman over the entire distance - albeit at times by only 0.3 seconds - to take the flag two seconds ahead of the Dutchman.
Zampedri, who has contested the Porsche Michelin Supercup every year since 1999, is the first Italian to take a points' win in the 13-year history of the series. Guest driver Luca Riccitelli won twice but was ineligible to earn points.
Taking up the race from fifth on the grid, David Saelens from Belgium managed to secure position three on the podium. Immediately after the start he overtook Richard Westbrook and two laps before the flag ousted his compatriot Geoffrey Horion from third place.
Christian Menzel (Germany) and his team mate from Austria Richard Lietz experienced problems over the weekend. Both complained about the suspension set-up which resulted in heavy tyre wear and made a top result impossible. Still, Menzel managed to fight his way from eleventh starting position to finish sixth, with Lietz receiving the flag eighth.
In the championship Patrick Huisman takes the lead from Richard Westbrook with David Saelens and Alessandro Zampedri in third and fourth position.
Alessandro Zampedri (winner): "This is a wonderful day. I dedicate this win to my wife and I want to thank her for everything. Well, my start was perfect. Then in the first lap I managed to open the gap to Patrick. During the race I had everything under control. At one point Patrick came to within 0.3 seconds of me but I had an answer to this and opened the gap again. I made just one mistake today. In lap seven I experienced some oversteering problems accelerating onto the start and finish straight. This is the first win in the Porsche Michelin Supercup for a regular competitor from Italy."
David Saelens (third): "Over the first three laps I had to build up the tyre pressure and the car was not handling too well. But once the tyres worked I found my speed. For the last two laps I had to take it a little easy as the handling began to deteriorate. I travel home sharing the same points tally with Richard Westbrook. I now rank third overall in the series and this gives me motivation for the next round in Monaco."
Geoffrey Horion (fourth): "My race was quiet. I kept David behind me without much problem until I made one big mistake and he outbraked me. I come from endurance racing so I have to get used to the sprints where every metre counts. Still, I am taking home plenty of points today."
Richard Westbrook (fifth): "My start was an absolute mess. I lost two positions. But luckily I was able to overtake Menzel in the first corner and Lietz later on in the race."
