Reigning Australian Carrera Cup champion Jim Richards (Jim Richards Racing / OAMPS Insurance Brokers) continued his love affair with driving Porsches in the Queensland sunshine by clocking the fastest practice time in round five at Queensland Raceway today.
Richards sent his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car around the 3.12km circuit in 1:12.7970, more than three-tenths of a second quicker than his fastest lap at the same circuit last year.
The seven-time Bathurst winner has the scent of victory in his nostrils after winning the final race at the last round in Perth three weeks ago, and will be looking to close the gap on series leader Alex Davison (Greg Murphy Racing / Glenfords Tool Centre) tomorrow and Sunday.
Davison, who along with Richards will be stepping into a Castrol Perkins Motorsport Commodore for the V8 Supercar endurance rounds this year, was the second fastest today less than two-tenths of a second slower than his Porsche rival.
Queensland hope Klark Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) proved that local knowledge is beneficial by clocking the third fastest time of the practice session.
Peter Fitzgerald (Fitzgerald Racing / Abcor, Acer) continued his consistent 2004 form with a best lap marginally behind Quinn's time.
Another Team VIP Petfoods young gun James Cressey was fifth fastest followed by series third placegetter and fellow Kiwi rival Fabian Coulthard (Greg Murphy Racing / Team Braun).
Rodney Jane (Rodney Jane Racing / Bob Jane T-Marts), 7th, and Jonathon Webb (Tekno Autosports), 8th, were both within a second of pacesetter Richards.
Round five of the 2004 Australian Carrera Cup at Queensland Raceway continues with qualifying and race one over 14 laps tomorrow Saturday July 3, and then race two and three also over 14 laps on Sunday.
The Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world with close-to-identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany set for racing in 2004. All cars have a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour with a 400-horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM.
'Trackside' on Network Ten will telecast round five of the Carrera Cup on Sunday July 11 at 2pm (check local guides).
