Leading the charge of New Zealand-based drivers in this year's Australian Carrera Cup is Paul Pedersen from the International Motorsport New Zealand team backed by Lakesawn Lumber.
Taupo-based Pedersen placed seventh in the inaugural Carrera Cup series in Australia last year behind Jim Richards, and was the second-ranked New Zealand driver by the end of the year. Team mate Kevin Bell just finished ahead of Pedersen in the championship points standings.
This year, despite missing round one at the Clipsal 500, Pedersen has been one of the more consistent drivers with round placings of fifth (Eastern Creek), sixth (Hidden Valley) and sixth (Barbagallo) respectively.
He currently sits fifth in the championship after four of the nine rounds on 279 points, and is the leading New Zealand-based driver so far.
An impressive round showing at Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia last week has led to Pedersen being recognised as the 'Profile of the Round'.
ROUND 4 WRAP
The Barbagallo round was a case of improvement in every session for Pedersen. It was a disappointing start for the International Motorsport NZ driver, qualifying on the sixth row on the grid in 11th place. Pedersen's best lap of 59.2 seconds in qualifying was almost four-tenths of a second slower than his practice time.
In race one over 15 laps on the Saturday, Pedersen made up three places to cross the finish line in eighth. Then this result repeated itself in race two on the Sunday morning.
The 30-lap final race on Sunday afternoon showcased Pedersen's potential in the all-Porsche category. A hard-charging effort saw the Kiwi move from eighth to his overall race finishing position of fifth, and only behind the big series four of Alex Davison, Jim Richards, Fabian Coulthard and Peter Fitzgerald.
Pedersen's solid finish to the first Western Australian round of the Carrera Cup, saw him finish sixth overall for the round and move up to fifth in the championship.
