Ford has drawn first blood in the battle for the 1995 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship with a win by former World Champion Alan Jones in the traditional lead up to the championship, the Triple Challenge at Sydney's Eastern Creek.

The meeting got off to a spectacular start during Thursday's private practice when reigning Australian Champion Mark Skaife crashed his new VR Commodore at over 200 kmh. Skaife was dragged unconscious from the car and was admitted to hospital with severe concussion and bruising.

In practice former World 500cc motorcycle champion Wayne Gardner put the new VR on pole from Falcon runners Glen Seton and Jones.

Seton won the first 5 lap dash to give the new EF Falcon its debut win from Jones and Gardner.

Jones took over to win the 2nd heat from Seton and Gardner and then went on to take the main 15 lapper with Seton once again second and Neil Crompton's VR Commodore in third.

Overall it was Alan Jones in first from Seton and the consistant Crompton pipping Bathurst winner Larry Perkins and Gardner

The teams now move to Melbourne's Sandown International Raceway for Round 1 of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championships on Sunday February 5th.

A preview of the meeting has been posted to r.a.s.misc and aus.cars.
