SUNDAY, FEB 4, 1996 SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL MOTOR RACEWAY, MELBOURNE,

AUSTRALIA... Rookie sensation Craig Lowndes continued his dream debut in the Shell Australian Touring Car Championships with another overall win in round two at Melbourne's Sandown Raceway. The 22 year old just managed to hold off local Ford driver Glen Seton to claim his second win in a row after his amazing debut at Eastern Creek.

HEAT ONE Lowndes won the first heat of the 3 heat contest from pole setting a new lap record in the process. Defending champion John Bowe tried hard in the early stages of the race to catch Lowndes but he had his hands full with Sandown favourite Peter Brock who grabbed third.

HEAT TWO John Bowe was the winner in heat 2 but only just from a fast finishing Glen Seton. Wayne Gardner started well and led for some laps but Bowe took him on the main straight before Gardner had car problems. This left Brock in second but Seton gave Brocky a nudge for the second week running and Brock was gone . Another local, Mark Skaife, who like Seton is based in nearby Dandenong, was third leading home Craig Lowndes who struggled to overcome a poor start and a minor start line incident with team mate Brock.

HEAT THREE It was an all Falcon front row for Heat 3 and Seton made an uncharacteristic demon start to head the field in to turn one. Craig Lowndes and Dick Johnson had a coming together that caused havoc mid field and left Dick and privateer David Parsons out of the race. Lowndes fought his way back through the field before attempting a injudicious manoeuvre on John Bowe on lap seven. Bowe was lucky to continue albeit in eighth place but the incident let Mark Skaife back into second. But no one could catch Seton.

Lowndes' third was just enough for him to hang on to an extremely popular overall victory with Seton second. Mark Skaife and John Bowe tied for third from Brock and another ATCC rookie Russell Ingall in fifth. After the race rumours around the Media centre indicated that the Seton and Brock crash in the second heat may be the subject of further investigation.
