Zhuhai International Circuit, China. 18 October 2001

In Thailand, he was lucky to even start the race at all, nevermind to finish the race on the podium. And in Korea, he decided to obtain help from Carly Motorsport, the outfit who built Paul's BMW. But alas, the car couldn't be set up properly for the short, tight Korean circuit.

Fast forward to Zhuhai for this weekend's Rd 13 & 14 races. With the car in a much more race-ready condition than ever, Paul Chan could spring a few surprises at a circuit he knows very well.

"Yes, I'm very familiar with the track, and all I need to do now is to get the car more balanced. I'm using old brake pads for today's (Thursday) practice sessions, and the car judders as if the ABS is kicking in!" he said.

All wasn't well, however, earlier in the morning when he experienced gearbox problems. "Whenever I shift into 4th gear and accelerate, the gear kicks by itself up into 3rd, and that was pretty scary especially when going into the tighter corners, as you would expect!" added Paul.

"We put in the spare gearbox in there today, and hopefully nothing will go wrong this weekend. I'm sending the original gearbox back to BMW in Germany, and we should know soon why a relatively new gearbox like mine had that synchromesh problem."
