Thrown a lifeline by the Motor Promoters Group's Power Tour the Future Tourers and Super Tourers categories have responded with a bigger entry than ever under the preceding management TOCA.

The two-litre hi-tech Super Tourers dominated the grid for both races with Sydney's Jamie Miller taking pole for race one in his Toyota Camry with a lap of 1 minute 30.4053 seconds.

Ford Modeo driver Peter Hills was second fastest before improving to a 1 minute 29.4200 time which has him on pole for race two. Hills' team mate Grant Johnson will start alongside in the latter race while fellow Modeo racer Sam Dale has locked up third place for both contests. Alfa driver David Auger has fourth for race one but mechanical problems means he will start from the rear of the second. Miller has fourth position for race two.

This year the V8 Future Tourers are much closer in times to their more technically advanced rivals with only 1.2 seconds separating the APS Racing Holden Commodore of Ray Sidebottom from pole position.

In a brand new VX model Sidebottom and team mate Bob Wright (Commodore VT) headed the V8 brigade for both races. However it will be Wright who has the top spot for race two.

Geoff Parker was next best in older VS model Commodore ahead of Bathurst Three Hour winner Terry Bosnjak in a V8 powered Mitsubishi Magna. The latter had serious understeer shudder yet managed to pip Parker for the second starting position.

A record number of 12 Future Tourers take on six Super Tourers in two races of 16 laps on Winton Raceway's full track layout. <pre> Program
