Morris & McConville Big Winners at Winton
Queenslands Paul Morris extended his lead in this years BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Car Championship to 13 points and Victorian Cameron McConville recorded his debut win in the series during a dramatic fifth round at Winton Raceway in Victoria on Sunday (August 10).
The pair finished equal highest points-scorers in the round with 27 each from the two 20-lap races, held in cool conditions. Morris, the 1995 champion, finished second in the opening heat and won race to in a BMW Motorsport 320, and 23-year-old McConville took the chequered flag in race one and was runner-up in the second event in an ORIX Audi Sport Australia A4.
The opening race had a controversial finish with Geoff Brabham and Brad Jones, who had held first and second places from the start, making contact on the final corner. Jones attempted an overtaking move in his ORIX Audi Sport Australia A4, and both his car and Brabhams Motorsport 320 went off the track. Jones recovered to finish third, and Brabham was seventh. A trailing arm was damaged on Brabhams car . Race director Peter Wollerman later announced that Jones had been excluded from the results of heat one for failing to exercise proper care. Jones team has appealed against the decision.
McConville, who had been third behind Brabham and Jones before their incident, won the first race in 29-mins 18.27-secs, finishing 3.54-secs ahead of Morris, who was followed by five-times Bathurst 1000 champion Jim Richards in a Volvo Racing Australia 850. Morris had started from the rear of the grid after being excluded from the opening qualifying session on Saturday (August 9) because his car exceeded the 8,500-rpm limit. Queenslands Cameron McLean was fourth and the leading Independents Cup Driver in a Greenfield Mowers Opel Vectra.
Morris won race two in 29-mins 3.79-secs, and had a winning margin of 0.15-secs over McConville. Brabham, who led the early stages of the race , finished third, ahead of Richards. Victorian Steven Richards was the top Independents Cup competitor, finishing fifth in a Valvoline Nissan Primera.
The results left Morris leading the drivers championship with 121 points, followed by Brabham on 108, McConville 95, Jones 77, and Jim Richards 70. BMW leads the manufacturers championship with 138 points, 20 clear of Audi, with Volvo third on 94.
Paul Morris (BMW Motorsport 328i): When they pit me to the back of the grid after qualifying I thought it would be tough to hold the championship lead. As it turned out things went my way so its a nice surprise to come away leading by more points than before.
Cameron McConville (ORIX Audi Sport Australia A4): I was behind Brad Jones and Geoff Brabham for most of the first race and I was expecting to be third. Instead I ended up first - it wasnt the way Id imagined Id win my first Super Touring race, but Ill take a win anyway it happens. Our Dunlop tyres came on strong in both races and Im really happy with the way things went.
Geoff Brabham (BMW Motorsport 320i): I went into the corner a few car lengths in front and Brad Jones drove into the back of me in my opinion he tried a passing move that was never going to come off. Its annoying to lose valuable points that way. Hes also lost his points so it hasnt helped either of us.
Brad Jones (ORIX Audi Sport Australia A4): Its unfortunate what happened on the last corner with Geoff Brabham. We were both racing hard and going for the win and sometimes these things happen. He left a hole and I drove through it. Things went wrong after we touched.
Jim Richards (Volvo Racing Australia 850): We wore out the front tyres too quickly, but hopefully well have some different ones at the next round. For one qualifying lap the Volvo is almost as quick as anyone, but over 20 laps were hurting. Third and fourth were quite good results, but Id rather be fifth, 2-secs behind the winner, than third and 30-secs behind.
