NEWMAN FINISHES 2ND IN PEUGEOT SUPER TOURER
Sydney-based Tony Newman overcame the late arrival of his Peugeot 406 Super Touring car in New Zealand to finish second in today's opening round of the South Island 3-Hour Endurance series at Teretonga.
Newman started the race from the rear of the grid because transport delays did not allow him to take part in yesterday's qualifying session for the first of the three rounds in the series.
The Peugeot he races in the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship was dispatched from Sydney 10 days ago, but did not arrive in the southern port of Invercargill until 1am this morning.
"We had only three laps of practice this morning so second place isn't so bad considering the dramas we had getting he car to the track in time," said Newman.
The race was won by New Zealanders Gary Geeves and Murray Cleland, who covered 157 laps in 3-hours 1-minute 1.90-seconds in a BMW 320i Super Tourer. They finished two laps clear of Newman, who drove the race solo.
Newman said his lack of pre-race practice meant his TC Motorsport crew had to gamble on making two pit-stops for fuel, and that proved decisive in the result.
"We had no idea where we stood with things like fuel economy, so we took a punt on making two stops whereas we probably could have got through with one," said Newman.
"The winning BMW made one stop and that made a big difference at the end of the day because we lost a lot of time making the extra trip to the pits."
The series, which is open to various New Zealand touring car categories, as well as Super Touring, continues at Timaru on April 2 and Christchurch on April 15.
Newman is racing in the series to prepare for this year's Australian Super Touring Championship which starts at Sydney's Oran Park on My 28. <pre> RESULTS - ROUND 1, SOUTH ISLAND ENDURANCE SERIES POS DRIVERS CAR TIME 1.
