BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 8 ORAN PARK, NSW: Qualifying Report, Saturday, August 29

AUDI DRIVERS WIN BOTH POLE POSITIONS

Works Audi drivers Cameron McConville and Brad Jones each won a pole position at Sydney's Oran Park Raceway today to extend their points advantage over Volvo rival Jim Richards in the battle for this year's BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship title.

McConville, who is second in the championship after seven of the eight rounds, claimed a bonus point by winning pole position for tomorrow's first race when he emerged fastest in the opening qualifying session in a Audi Sport Australia A4 quattro. The 24-year-old Victorian clocked a lap time of 1-min 9.775-secs, finishing just 0.002-secs clear of team-mate and championship leader Jones. In the second qualifying session Jones won a bonus point and pole position for race two with the fastest lap of 1-min 9.766-secs. McConville secured the other front-row starting position for race two with the second quickest time of 1-min 9.988-secs.

Richards, third in the championship, failed to add to his points tally when he qualified on the second row for both races. He was fourth in the opening session, and third in the session two. Jones now leads the championship with 163 points, followed by McConville on 159, while Richards is third with an unchanged tally of 155. Richards, who like the Audi team raced on Michelin tyres in previous rounds, has switched to Dunlop rubber for Oran Park. The first race is over 16 laps and the second race over 31 laps includes a compulsory pitstop.

DRIVER QUOTES:

BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "It's been almost a perfect build-up for me. The track was slower for the second session, but the car was better after we made some suspension changes. There are no team orders - I'm keen to win the title, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is for one of drivers do it, regardless of which one it is."

CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "I did my pole lap in the last few minutes of the (first) session. I tried for a quick lap earlier, but I had to abort it because I was held up by slower cars. It was incredibly close at the end between Brad (Jones) and I - someone said the difference of 0.002-secs worked out at less than 25cm for the lap."

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "It's a gamble changing tyres (from Michelin) to Dunlops, but we're in third place and we've got nothing to lose. When the Audis and Volvo are on the same tyres it's never worked to our advantage. We're trying something different and maybe the Dunlop will be more durable and give us the winning edge."
