BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 8 ORAN PARK, NSW: Qualifying Report, Saturday, February 10

MORRIS SETS 100-PERCENT POLE RECORD
Gold Coast-based Paul Morris today became the first driver to win every pole position in a BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship season.

Morris completed a 100-percent winning record of pole positions in the 2000-2001 championship when he emerged fastest in the two qualifying sessions at Oran Park in preparation for tomorrow's eighth and final round.

The qualifying performances by the 33-year-old Mount Cotton Estate Winery BMW 320i driver at Oran Park left him with a tally of 15 pole positions from the same number of qualifying sessions for the season. Morris, who has already clinched the championship title, was fastest in the first session in hot conditions with a lap time of 44.77-secs around the 1.9km circuit. Sydney policeman John Henderson was second, 0.05-secs behind Morris, followed by NSW's Jamie Miller in a Phoenix Motorsport Toyota Camry.

In the second qualifying session, held in cooler weather, Morris clocked 44.48-secs, to head Henderson and Sydney teenager Allan Gurr, making his debut in the Hi-Tech Nissan Primera. Gurr drove a Signature Security Systems Ford Mondeo in the opening five championship rounds. He then missed the following two rounds, but was recruited to race the Nissan after regular driver Kiel Johnson withdrew because of glandular fever.

NSW's Aaron McGill withdrew from the first qualifying session because of electrical problems with his Trinovin Nissan Primera, but drove in the second session. Sydney's Jim Cornish, who won the first race in the previous championship round at Wakefield Park on January 28, missed the first qualifying session at Oran Park with engine problems. He qualified ninth for race two. Tasmanian Owen Kelly stopped in the second qualifying session when a throttle cable broke on his Thermo King BMW 320i, but still managed to qualify fourth, as he did in the opening session. Tasmanian Tim Shaw was the leading V8 Future Tourer driver in both sessions in his ISASO-Carplan Holden Commodore.

DRIVER QUOTES:
PAUL MORRIS (Mount Cotton Estate Winery BMW 320i): "Qualifying today was a lottery because the track is dirty from the earthworks where they're building the new pit garages. I think we coped best with the conditions, but it wasn't easy. The forecast is for rain tomorrow, and if that's the case then the qualifying results go out the window! It's amazing to go through the season winning every pole position - it shows my team have consistently given me a competitive car."

JOHN HENDERSON (Sydney Cranes & Transport Holden Vectra): "I'm hoping the hot weather stays around because our car looks after its tyres better than most of the others in those conditions. We got the most out of the car we could in qualifying so I'm happy to be starting on the front row for both races."

ALAN GURR (Hi-Tech Motorsport Nissan Primera): "I got the call with an offer to drive the car last night, so it's been a rush. The Nissan seems reasonably easy to set up an drive, although we struggled with a lack of grip in the first session. We softened the rear of the car for the second session and the balance was better. To finish third in the second session was probably better than I'd expected given the circumstances and the lack of time I've had in this car."
