BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 4 EASTERN CREEK, NSW: Qualifying Report, Saturday, June 6

JONES & RICHARDS WIN POLE POSITIONS

Works Audi driver Brad Jones and Volvo veteran Jim Richards dominated qualifying at Eastern Creek today and won the pole positions for tomorrow's fourth round of the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship.

Jones, the 1996 champion, claimed pole position for race one at Eastern Creek over 11 laps when he emerged fastest in the opening qualifying session with a lap time of 1-min 33.616-secs around the 3.9km circuit in an Audi Sport Australia A4 quattro.

He narrowly headed Jim Richards, who was second in a Volvo Dealer Team S40, and Independents Cup leader Cameron McLean of Queensland in a Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320. The top three were separated by just 0.039-secs. Championship leader Cameron McConville qualified fourth in a works Audi A4 quattro and will start on row two alongside McLean.

Richards, who is equal second in the championship with Jones, won pole position for race two with the quickest lap of 1-min 33.274-secs in the second qualifying session. McLean secured the other front-row starting position by qualifying second, while Jones and McConville finished third and fourth.

New Zealand's Dwayne Bewley qualified a career-best sixth for both races in his Fastway Couriers Peugeot 405. The second race over 21 laps includes a compulsory pitstop. Jones and Richards scored a championship point for their pole positions. McConville leads the championship with 77 points with Jones and Richards equal second on 68.

DRIVER QUOTES:

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "We kept improving the car in practice, and once we put new tyres on for qualifying our lap times were very competitive. The balance of my car on my pole lap in the second (qualifying) session was perfect. I'm expecting the Audis and BMW to beat me off the start line, but I think we've got the speed to run them down."

BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "There's not much difference between the top four in qualifying so it will probably come down to who came make their tyres last the best over the race distance. Cameron (McConville) and I are close in the points so there are no team orders at this stage. Our aim is to beat the Volvo, and, of course, the BMW."

MARK ADDERTON (Attitude Clothing Honda Accord): "This year I've had lonely races behind the front four, and ahead of the next group. Looking at qualifying that could change here because there's a bunch of guys close to my lap times. I'm the only one in the group on Dunlops, and that could be an advantage - Dunlop have provided us with a 'special' tyre."
