BOB JANE T-MARTS BATHURST ‘99 - Thursday, September 30 MOUNT PANORAMA, NSW: Bathurst Tourers V8 Qualifying Report

Victorian Ray Sidebottom is the early pacesetter for Sunday’s Bathurst Tourers V8 300km endurance race in the Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst ‘99 motor racing meeting.

The previously unheralded 41-year-old company director from Numurkah, near Shepparton, clocked the fastest lap in today’s opening qualifying session with a time of 2-mins 31.32-secs around the 6.2km circuit in an Australian Petroleum Supplies Holden Commodore. Sidebottom, who is driving in the new Bathurst Tourers category event with Andrew McInnes, set his best time on his 14th and final lap in the session, which was held in fine conditions.

Marshall Brewer, racing a Bruce Williams Motorsport Commodore with fellow-Victorian Terry Whyhoon, was second fastest, 0.09-secs slower than Sidebottom. AUSCAR champion Darren McDonald was third in the Powermac Racing Products Commodore he is driving with triple Australian production car title-holder Peter Fitzgerald.

James Brock, the 23-year-old son of nine-times Bathurst 1000 champion Peter Brock, qualified eighth with 2-min 37.35-secs in a Biante Model Cars Commodore. Brock had earlier been second quickest in the opening practice session with 2-mins 34.73-secs. Peter Brock is assisting his son’s team at Bathurst.

Drivers in the Super Touring category begin practice and qualifying tomorrow in preparation for their 100km race on Saturday and a 500km event on Sunday.

RAY SIDEBOTTOM (Australian Petroleum Supplies Commodore): “I kept getting caught up in ‘traffic’ until the last few minutes of the session and once I got a clear lap I was able to put in a good lap time. Our team has been working non-stop for nine weeks to get the car ready for Bathurst. I’ve never been to Bathurst before. It’s a great circuit - you can’t beat it.”

MARSHALL BREWER (Bruce Williams Motorsport Commodore): “We did some testing at Calder (Park) last week, but Bathurst is a different type of track so we’re starting from scratch with car set-ups like everyone else. I can’t see tyres being a problem around here.”

JAMES BROCK (Biante Model Cars Commodore): “It’s great having Dad (Peter Brock) here because he’s a good source of information about what to do at this track. When you do a quick lap around here you have to respect this place because of the speeds and all the concrete walls.”
