Toronto, Ontario (July 06, 2002): Ashley Taws of Newmarket, Ontario, has secured pole position for tomorrow's Formula Ford race at Exhibition Place in Toronto. The eighteen-year-old driver of the "Be Anything with Barbie at Wal-Mart" car secured the first-place starting position by lapping the 2.824-km (1.755-mile) Molson Indy street circuit in 1-minute, 19.471-seconds.
Two qualifying sessions were held for tomorrow's race and Taws, a rookie in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship, was fastest in both of them. She appeared completely at home driving on the intimidating course through the streets of Toronto.
"I was surprised, I felt completely comfortable on the track," said Taws. "The guys at AIM Autosport did a great job setting up the car and it gave me the confidence to push hard. I also have a lot of friends and family here, and everywhere I go, people are shouting 'Barbie, Barbie' so the support is amazing."
After securing pole this afternoon, Taws didn't even have time to celebrate as she was whisked away to a series of interviews and autograph sessions. The pole position sets a new qualifying benchmark for women in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship as Taws eclipsed her own mark of third set in the opening race of the season at Mosport.
"Its a proud moment for me," Taws admitted when asked if she was proud to be setting new standards for female racers, "But I don't look at it as male against female. When we put our helmets on, we're all just competitors. It makes me feel good to know that I was fastest and got pole, especially when some of the other drivers have a lot of experience in this series and on this track."
Tomorrow's Formula Ford race, round four in a nine-race series, is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm, immediately following the CART Championship Car race.
