Taws battles through another hard weekend
A persistent Ashley Taws battled through a second weekend of misfortune in the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region's Magnum Ice Race Series at the fairgrounds in Minden, Ontario, February 2-3. Her car simply didn't run well and, for the second weekend running, she was hobbled by mechanical problems.
The eighteen-year-old Newmarket, Ontario, resident was very much looking forward to her second season of ice racing. Last year, she became somewhat a fixture at the front of the field, taking second in the Class 2 Championship and being named Rookie of the Year, but in two weekends of racing this year, she has been unable to make her presence felt.
Her car appeared to suffer from a fuel-flow problem, but with mechanic Scott Stevens absent this weekend, Ashley and her father, Peter, were on their own trying to identify and cure the malady.
"The car was handling really well," Ashley said. "It was fine in the corners, but when I put my foot on the gas, the engine just chugged and popped and coughed."
Unfortunately, next weekend will be Ashley's last chance to put in a good performance on the ice. The series got off to a late start due to the warm winter and Ashley has commitments that will keep her from the rest of the events.
"I hope next week is a good one because it's my last chance this year," she commented. "I don't like finishing near the back, so I want to go out with a good finish. I'm not getting upset, it's still fun, but I want to win one for my dad 'cause he stands out in the cold all day watching me!"
Once ice racing is over, Ashley will anxiously await the start of the road racing season. For the past two years, she has competed in the Isseco-Kumho Formula 1200 Championship, finishing third in 2000 and taking second last year at the wheel of the "Be Anything With Barbie" car. This year, Ashley anticipates graduating to the next level.
