HERRON AIMING FOR FIRST WIN OF 2009 AT DONINGTON PARK
Northern Ireland's Andrew Herron has his sights set on the top step of the ELF Renault Clio Cup podium ahead of the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2009 season which will take place at Donington Park National Circuit in Leicestershire this weekend, 16th/17th May.
Heading into the event, the 20-year-old is fourth in the driver standings with three podiums to his credit after a successful start to the season at Brands Hatch and Thruxton. Although happy with his solid start to the year, Andrew is hungry to return to the winner's circle and plans on mounting a challenge for race victories at Donington.
As one of the Dromore racer's favourite circuits, the 1.95-mile configuration features what he considers to be the best sequence of corners in the UK -- the run from Redgate through Hollywood, plunging down the daunting Craner Curves and into the important right-hander at the Old Hairpin.
"I've always been strong at Donington so I'm confident we should be able to fight for two wins at the weekend, if we don't come away with at least one win I'll be pretty disappointed", said Andrew, "The track is perhaps my favourite of all the circuits we visit, it's different to all of the others and the run from the top of Craners down through the Old Hairpin is absolutely fantastic to drive.
"I'm aiming for at least one win at Donington but it's all about qualifying. Thruxton proved that to us a couple of weeks ago, we had the pace to win without any doubt but qualifying fifth on the grid always meant it would be very hard to be in a position to win. We did fight through for a couple of podiums which was a great effort but we need to start on the front row at Donington to fight for wins."
With a tight 2009 race budget, Dromore-based Andrew elected to sit-out last week's official championship test day at Croft in North Yorkshire in order to conserve funds. Ideally, he would have taken part in the outing with his JHR Developments squad but he has to be cautious with regard to his expenditure throughout the season.
The Brian Herron Contracts backed driver is working extremely hard to attract additional backing for the remainder of 2009 and into 2010 and hopes a return to the top step of the podium at Donington will help open some doors.
He added: "I'm confident with the Clio again and in a really good mood ahead of the next couple of races, I'm looking forward to it and hope we can achieve a win, not just for me but for the team as well as they've put a huge amount into making this year happen. Our budget is pretty tight, that's why we didn't test at Croft last week, but hopefully a win this weekend will help our cause."
Officially timed pre-event practice will take place at Donington Park's National Circuit next Thursday, 14th May. Qualifying for rounds five and six is scheduled for 11.40 on Saturday, 16th May, with the first of the weekend's races set to follow at around 17.15.
Round six, which will be screened live across the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4, is expected to commence at approximately 13.30 on Sunday, 17th May. Viewers can access ITV4 at channel 28 on Freeview, channel 120 on Sky Digital and through cable channel 117.
