FT. Collins, CO--The 1998 schedule of the American IndyCar Series was announced today by Bill Tempero, President of AIS. "We are very pleased with the variety of race courses on our schedule this year," stated Tempero. "The driver that wins the 1998 championship will need to be a well-rounded driver who is adept on ovals, road courses and street courses." AIS has entered into a three-year contract with the promoter of the San Diego street race with hopes that this will become the premier event each year. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will be the official tire supplier for the third year, and will again contribute to the year end point fund. "We are pleased with our association with Goodyear, and our drivers are running on the same tires as CART and IRL which is a great advantage for any driver moving into either of the other series," said Tempero. Negotiations are ongoing for televising the San Diego race as well as two additional AIS races in the 1998 season. Testing has begun in preparation for the AIS opening race at the 1.8 mile road course in Hallett, OK on April 5. Rookie orientation will take place at the track on April 3.
