2000 BANKFIN TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS 7 AND 8, AA KYALAMI, MIDRAND SATURDAY, 13th MAY, 2000
Mike Carroll found the right 'go-faster' pills for his Petronas Syntium Opel Vectra drivers at Kyalami, notching up a 1-2 win in the first race at AA Kyalami at the weekend. Nissan responded in the second race with championship leader Giniel de Villiers taking yet another win.
Deon Joubert led round seven from pole position to the chequered flag 7,9 sec ahead of teammate Shaun Watson-Smith. Watson-Smith had to fight his way past both De Villiers and Duncan Vos in the second works Nissan Primera after starting from fifth on the grid. The reigning champion fell back from second on the grid as the 50 kg of penalty weight he was carrying had its effect on his tyres and the Nissan's handling.
Vos finished third, 9,6 sec behind Joubert and 7,8 sec ahead of Shaun van der Linde (BMW 318i) who came through from the back of the grid after gearbox problems in qualifying.
De Villiers (Nissan) re-asserted his authority in round eight and extended his championship lead after closest rival Watson-Smith (Opel) retired with gearbox problems.
The reigning champion chased poleman Van der Linde (BMW) for four laps before taking the lead and holding off his rival to win his fifth race of the year by 0,7 sec. He also set the fastest lap of the race (a new lap record) with a time of 1 min 52,276 sec.
Vos led the charge for the third podium position throughout the 12 laps, chased by Joubert (Opel) and Moss (Audi). He duly finished third, 1,8 sec behind his teammate and over 12 seconds ahead of Joubert.
