Sammy Swindell Roars in Hagerstown Finale By Richard Day HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 4) - Sammy Swindell's #1 ChannelLock Gambler appeared to be the fastest car on the track late in the Skoal Outlaw Series' Preliminary Feature at Hagerstown Speedway Saturday. He reeled in Steve Smith and was only one car-length behind when they took the checkered flag. Swindell was definitely the fastest when a capacity crowd welcomed the series back to Hagerstown Sunday, winning the Vivarin Dash and leading all 30 laps in the "A" Feature for his seventh victory of the season. The $9,000 victory pushed Sammy past his brother, Jeff, into fourth place in the World of Outlaws point standings. Although Smith beat him out of turn four when the green flag fell in the main event, Swindell was ahead by the time they reached the second corner. Seconds later, however, Todd Shaffer took the #88 Turnbaugh Oil Gambler for a spin in turn two, bringing out the caution flag and nullifying the start. Sammy burst into the lead when the race resumed, and opened an eight-car-length advantage within three laps. Skoal Outlaw Series point standings leader Mark Kinser took the high line around Smith in the second corner during the opening lap to take over the runner-up spot. While Swindell stayed in the low groove, Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim around the rim to challenge him for the lead. Stevie Smith passed fast-qualifier Steve Kinser for fourth place with a high move in turn four late in the fifth lap. The leaders were approaching lapped traffic when Shaffer spun again - this time in the third corner - the next time around. An oil leak was discovered in the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim as the green flag replaced the yellow, forcing Smith to drop out of the race. He was credited with a 24th-place finish. Jeff Swindell passed four cars during the first six laps before victimizing Johnny Herrera one lap later. Steve Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Smith on the front straightaway to take over third place early in lap eight. Sammy's move from the low line into the high groove during the 11th lap allowed him to increase his advantage to 15 car- lengths. His move into lapped traffic two laps later allowed Mark to catch him by the midpoint of the race, however. Swindell increased his advantage with a quick move between a pair of backmarkers the next time around. But more dense lapped traffic allowed Mark to catch Sammy during lap 17. The pattern continued with each passing lap. Every time Swindell broke out of lapped traffic and raced away from the field, more backmarkers loomed ahead, allowing Mark to narrow the gap. Sammy opened a 10-car-length advantage with 11 laps remaining, only to have Mark narrow the gap to four car-lengths one lap later. A quick move through a pair of backmarkers late in the 22nd lap finally gave Swindell a comfortable advantage. He increased it to 10 car-lengths while Herrera and Steve Kinser relegated Smith to fifth place with 7 1/2 laps remaining. Sammy's advantage ballooned to 15 car-lengths during the 25th lap, allowing him to cruise to the 206th victory of his World of Outlaws career. "The car got tight toward the end of the race," Swindell said following the third victory of his career at Hagerstown. "I had to be careful around the top. I had a little trouble in lapped traffic; it seemed like every time I came up on some lapped cars, they were side-by-side." Herrera held off Steve Kinser to claim third place. Completing the top 10 in the Skoal Outlaw Series' 45th event of the year were Smith, Second Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild, 17th-starting Dave Blaney, Jeff Swindell, Andy Hillenburg and Paul McMahan. Hillenburg's ninth-place finish pushed him past Stevie Smith into sixth place in the World of Outlaws point standings.
