Bernd Maylander Pole to Podium - Reigning Champ Patrick Huisman is Back

Eschmann-Manthey-Racing team mates, Bernd Maylander (D) and Patrick Huisman (NL), dominated the action-packed opening round to the European start of the Porsche Pirelli SuperCup in Imola. 28-year-old Bernd Maylander took a well-deserved green light to chequered flag victory after 13 laps in front of more than 120,000 spectators. "Everything was just perfect. I attacked right from the start, and quickly pulled away from the field. But I was not at the absolut limit at any time during the race. When I saw Patrick in my rear view mirror, my race became dramatic again." Reigning champion Patrick Huisman was back in top form, ploughing his way from eighth on the grid to take second. "After my bad luck at the opening round in Melbourne it was high time for a good result. I was very aggressive and after two laps I was in fourth. When competitors spun off ahead I pulled out all stops. I'm very pleased with my race." Experience paid off for long-standing Porsche specialist Altfrid Heger (Porsche Centre Munich-Oberbayern Motorsport) who took third. "Starting from ninth looks worse on paper than in reality. I qualified within a second of the pole position, so I knew I could make up places today." Pedro Couceiro from Portugal (Porsche Centre Rhein-Oberberg) leads the points after a second place at the season-opener in Australia, and a sixth here in Imola. "I had to survive amongst the fierce competition. I knew I couldn't win, so I concentrated on the points." Britain's Johnny Mowlem experienced a race of mixed fortunes. The 30-year-old Parabolica-McCulloch Motorsport pilot started from second, dropped back to fourth behind German Ralf Kelleners but in the final lap shunted Kelleners, knocking them both off the track. Mowlem finished eighth, Kelleners 15th.
