2013 Race of Champions event cancelled

Tensions in Thailand force event cancellation

Organizers and Thai authorities have announced the 2013 Race Of Champions will not take place as planned on December 14-15 due to political problems in the country.

With the "Red Shirts" politicial group currently occupying parts of Bangkok including the ROC event site, the Rajamangala Stadium, there was no hope of putting on the traditional end-of-year international event that has been held all over the world for 25 consecutive years.

"Our thoughts are with the Thai people during this difficult period and we wish that a peaceful solution will soon be found," the ROC website stated. "We are currently looking at options of repeating the success of last year's event in Bangkok on another date."

This year's planned participants in the ROC included nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, extreme skydiver Felix Baumgartner and Williams F1 test driver Susie Wolff.
