Reigning British Touring Car Champion, Gabriele Tarquini joined the Tyrrell Yamaha Formula 1 team today, Friday, to test a 1994 022 car at southern Spain's Jerez circuit. The 32 year old Italian, who has contested 37 Grands Prix but hasn't driven a Formula 1 car since 1992, drove alongside team regular Ukyo Katayama during the third of tour days scheduled testing with two chassis.
Ukyo Katayama evaluated a different version of Yamaha's new 3-litre V10. 1995 engine, fitted to a 1994 022 chassis. Once again the engine performed well and Ukyo recorded 40 timed laps, with a best lap time of 1 min 24.88 sec for the 4.428 kms circuit, running on part-worn tyres. The chassis uses the innovative 1995 suspension being developed for the new 023 car, Ukyo's latest time virtually matches his qualifying time for last year's Grand Prix, set with a 3.5-litre engine.
"Ukyo and the entire team had another good day's testing and we are making significant progress with both the new engine and our 1995 suspension system" commented Mike Gascoyne, Tyrrell's Deputy Technical Director.
Gabriele Tarquini completed 37 timed laps at the wheel of a 1994 Tyrrell Yamaha 022 powered by a K-specification version of the 3.5-litre Yamaha V10 engine. "Gabriele did an extremely competent job today" said Mike Gascoyne. "He spent some time getting used to Formula 1 power again and was very clear about setting up the chassis. His quickest time was 1 min 24.48 sec."
The Tyrrell Yamaha team will continue its test programme tomorrow, when another version of Yamaha's 3-litre V1 0 will be fined to one of the 022 cars for evaluation by Tarquini - having his second outing with Tyrrell Yamaha. Newcomer, Frenchman Emmanuel Collard, will test the other 022 fined with a fresh 3.5-litre engine.
