Flock trust fund established

CONCORD, N.C. (Feb. 3, 1998) A trust fund to help offset some of the medical expenses incurred by two-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tim Flock has been established by Charlotte Motor Speedway President H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler and Speedway Motorsports Inc. Chairman O. Bruton Smith.

Flock, who won NASCAR Grand National titles -- the forerunner of today's NASCAR Winston Cup Series -- in 1952 and 1955, was diagnosed last week with terminal cancer. He began radiation treatment last week and, following a visit to Speedweeks 1998 at Daytona International Speedway, his treatment will continue.

Following his retirement from competition, Flock spent time as an employee of Charlotte Motor Speedway. He has no medical insurance so there is a concern due to the high cost of treatment.

"Tim has been a great ambassador for our sport," Wheeler said. "He is in a battle for his life and I don't want to see him and his family worry about the financial hardships this .... disease causes. Hopefully, this trust fund can help Tim, his wife Frances and the rest of the family to concentrate on Tim's well-being."

In addition to the trust fund, the family plans to sell some of Flock's extensive racing memorabilia gathered during his racing career. Items for sale include Flock's two NASCAR Grand National championship trophies. Interested buyers may call Flock's son, Don Flock, at (704) 593-0690.

Donations to the trust fund may be sent to: Tim Flock Trust Fund; c/o First Union; PO Box 184; Harrisburg, N.C. 28075.
