De Wardt makes successful European track debut
Yesterday afternoon, Thai-born, Winston de Wardt successfully completed his first Formula Renault test, at the famous Donington Park circuit in England.
Driving with Team AKA, headed by the highly successful and respected driver Andrew Kirkaldy, de Wardt took little time to familiarise himself with the undulating circuit, which is one of Europe's finest, in what were challengingly wet conditions. For his debut in the powerful 2.0 litre Renault, de Wardt, who has just turned 21 years old, could not have chosen a more difficult platform to launch his European campaign from, in front of the assembled media.
Running with his favoured number 55, he completed 147 laps of the 1.96mile circuit, getting progressively faster, as he became more familiar with the intricacies of his new car. By the end of the day, de Wardt had upset the form guide, lapping quicker than many of the more established names, in what was intended to be an initial shakedown ahead of his first exclusive test, in Albacete, Spain.
De Wardt commented, "That was a great experience. The day went better than we could have realistically expected; the team gelled well around me and did their absolute best. I now appreciate how the standard of circuit, teams, and competition in Europe offers the perfect platform for me to build a top-flight career from. I can't wait to get into the car again soon."
Team AKA Director and driver coach, Andrew Kirkaldy added, "Winston did a great job today. In a foreign environment, in respect of his car, the team, the track and the conditions, he did exactly what was asked of him. We know where he's losing time, and the good news is that it should be possible for him to make those gains."
