BOTTAS DOMINATES AT DONINGTON!
AKA Cobra driver, Valtteri Bottas, took dominant victories in both of this weekend's Formula Renault Winter Series races at Donington Park; he drove with incredible focus throughout the race meeting, demonstrating the 'ice-cool' trait of today's breed of Finnish drivers. 2007 Formula Renault Graduate Cup winner, Adam Christodoulou, had his chances of a win scuppered in qualifying but fought back with some sensational driving, whilst Nathan Caratti performed brilliantly in qualifying and was rewarded with a fifth place finish in race one.
Valtteri qualified in second place for both of the Donington races -- one qualifying session decided the grid positions for both races -- after suffering with traffic during the session. It was hard to get a clear lap with so many cars on the circuit. Not getting pole didn't deter the Finn and he immediately took the lead for race one going into the first corner. Riki Christodoulou then managed to slip past but Valtteri soon took him back and was in the lead at the end of lap one, staying there until the chequered flag and win number one. He then took the lead again at the start of race two and led all the way to the flag, taking a stylish second win.
Adam Christodoulou had a tough time in qualifying when he was pushed off the track into a spin and then had to pit with a puncture. He was unable to post a representative time and had to set for a lowly 27th place on the grid for race one. A storming driver from Adam saw him rise 14 places by the end of lap four, cutting through the field cleanly and precisely. He eventually finished the race in ninth place. Again he had a lot of work to fight his way through the pack in race two and he came home in 12th place. Enjoyable racing but Adam knows he was quicker that Valtteri during testing and wants results; expect him to be back on top at Croft.
Nathan Caratti had an excellent qualifying session, showing that consistency pays with two top six grid positions for the races. The Australian racer had some great battles in race one before finishing in fifth position. In race two Nathan was hit from behind by Jon Lancaster which punctured his tyre. He had to pit for new rubber but lost too much time and finished way down the order. After a troubled second half to the 2007 season, Nathan has shown that he has the pace to get top results in Formula Renault.
Andrew Kirkaldy, Team Principal:
"Overall we had a very successful weekend. It's great to win races, especially when the competition is so strong. The Winter Series is usually for new drivers but there were a lot of top drivers out there at Donington and it looks like that was our first glimpse of the 2008 Formula Renault line-up. All good news for us, considering the result!"
The final two rounds of the Formula Renault UK Winter Series take place next weekend (10 November) at Croft in North Yorkshire.
