HARRY TINCKNELL: WINTER SERIES CHAMPION
Harry Tincknell's results at Rockingham today sealed the 2009 Formula Renault Winter Series for the 18 year-old CRS Racing driver. After two storming victories at Snetterton last weekend Harry just needed two good finishes to take the title at Rockingham and he delivered with two podium finishes.
Overnight rain had left a slippery track for qualifying so the quick times came right at the end of the session. Harry made the best of the conditions, nailed his last two laps, and took pole for both races.
It soon transpired that pole position didn't hold it's usual advantages though. Pole was on the slippery inside line, rather than the racing line which made the start tricky for Harry. He immediately dropped to fourth but scrambled his way back through to third at the first corner. There were no dramas after this point and Harry took the chequered flag in third place.
To win the title Harry just had to finish in race two. He got a better start this time but then ran wide at turn one, dropping to second. A crash further down the field meant that race two was red-flagged. It soon restarted, shortened to just seven laps. Harry felt that he had good pace but decided to sit back and settle for second as that was enough to take the Winter Series title very comfortably.
"The Rockingham track is fast and flowing," said Harry. "When you start battling for position you end up losing a lot of momentum so I decided to play the safe game and settle for second. It's a great feeling to win the Winter Series as it sets me up for the 2010 season. It's good to get my first two wins under my belt and I think my driving has improved a lot after two weekends of racing on very greasy tracks. As I was the only CRS driver here I have also had a great opportunity to build up a fantastic rapport with the team and now I'm really looking forward to next year."
