BRANDS HATCH POLE POSITION ELUDES BRATT BY A WHISKER
Will Bratt has every chance of fighting for his fourth race victory of the 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship season at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit tomorrow after claiming a front-row start for round 16 during qualifying earlier today.
The Apotex Scorpio Motorsport ace, who heads into Sunday's two 24-lap races third in the championship standings, produced a fastest lap of 44.468 seconds (97.03mph) during this afternoon's round 16 qualifying session to secure second on the grid, a mere 0.081 seconds shy of his third career Formula Renault UK pole position.
Delighted with the handling of his car, Will has high hopes for a strong podium finish at least during tomorrow afternoon's race. More than that though, the Oxon 19-year-old has his sights set on outgunning pole-sitter and championship leader Duncan Tappy at the start as he bids to add another race win to his impressive season tally.
"If my car is working as well in the race tomorrow as it has in qualifying this afternoon then I'm confident we have a great opportunity to fight for the win", said the University of Oxford scholar looking ahead to round 16, "We know we have the ability to get the job done and while a podium would be good, a win is what I want."
Will's chances of a podium result in Sunday morning's 15th round of the campaign look far slimmer though after posting the seventh fastest time during the first of today's two qualifying sessions, his best lap a time of 47.444 seconds (90.95mph).
Although dissatisfied to be four 10ths of a second shy of the front-row, Will knows he gave a good account of himself in a session which saw half the field run full wet weather set-ups, the remainder taking a gamble on the circuit drying sufficiently before the end.
Loughborough-based Apotex Scorpio took a team decision to run wet settings but it unfortunately failed to pay off, Will losing out during the closing minutes of the round 15 session. Nonetheless, from the head of the fourth row, he has high hopes of gaining a few positions on the opening lap at a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking.
"It's disappointing to be on the fourth row, especially here at Brands Hatch Indy, but I'm confident we can make a good start and challenge for good points", added Will, "If you consider the wet set-up gamble we took though, to be seventh fastest isn't a bad result at all so I'm sure we can be competitive on Sunday."
Round 15 of the 2007 season will begin at 10.00 tomorrow, Sunday, 19th August, with the 16th round of the campaign scheduled to get underway at 17.00.
