RENAULT STAR HYLKEMA LOOKING FORWARD TO OULTON RACES
Dutch single-seater racer Thomas Hylkema can't wait for rounds seven and eight of the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire next weekend, 5th/6th June -- the scene of one of his career best performances last season.
Recording a highly competitive top seven finish at the picturesque venue during the first race at the corresponding fixture in 2009, the Manor Competition driver thoroughly enjoys the demands of the track's Island Circuit configuration and is aiming for a similarly strong showing this time around.
On Monday of this week, 24th May, the Formula Renault UK competitors gathered at Snetterton in Norfolk for an officially timed test day where Thomas prepared well for next weekend's races by ending the outing 11th quickest overall -- just eight 10ths of a second shy of the outright pace.
Although slightly disappointed not to have been nearer to the top six, largely due to problems with red flag session stoppages while on fast runs, the 21-year-old from Delft in The Netherlands was satisfied with the work completed.
During the morning, Thomas steered his Club Car and TORO liveried FR 2.0 to a best lap of 1m05.350 seconds (107.53mph) and improved by nearly a full second in the afternoon to end with a quickest time of 1m04.479 seconds (108.98mph). He was also the second highest placed Manor driver.
"I'm quite pleased with the Snetterton test", said Thomas, "We weren't quite as fast as we should have been as I was pretty unlucky with red flags so we know there was more pace in me and the package as a whole. With that in mind, it was a good day and good preparation for next weekend.
"Oulton Park is a great circuit, I love driving there and we had a good run at the track last year so I'm focused on another good performance this time around. We've had some bad luck this year so far but we've also been very fast too so I'm aiming for a consistently strong weekend. If we can leave Oulton with a couple of top six results -- or better -- I'll be very happy."
Following pre-event practice at Oulton Park on Friday, 4th June, qualifying for round seven of the 2010 season is currently scheduled to take place at 09.05 on Saturday, 5th June, with the round eight session set to follow at 14.05. The first race of the weekend will then get underway at 17.10. On Sunday, 6th June, round eight will commence at approximately 13.35.
