CALADO CRUISES TO OULTON PARK BEST
Fortec Motorsport's James Calado (Cropthorne, Worcester) continued his excellent pre-season form with the fastest time during official pre-season testing in the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship at Oulton Park Island circuit on Wednesday, 18th March. The 19-year-old preparing for his second season in the championship, posted a time of 1m 17.123s (103.90mph average) during the morning session -- more than a second quicker than his nearest rival Alpine Motorsport's Dean Stoneman (Southampton).
Dry but slightly misty conditions greeted the drivers for the morning session on the 2.23-mile Cheshire circuit. Following on from his impressive run during testing at Snetterton last week, Calado set the quickest time of the session and for the day on his 20th and last lap using fresh tyres.
Stoneman, also on his 20th lap, set what would become his fastest time at 1m 18.134s (102.56mph average) -- 1.011s behind Calado. Fortec driver Oli Webb (Knutsford), on his home circuit, went third quickest with Jordan Oakes (Hopton on Sea), now competing in the Hitech Junior car, going fourth fastest.
Fortec drivers Fredrik Blomstedt (SWE) and Will Stevens (Oxshott, Surrey) were also among the top drivers for the session as were Manor Competition's Thomas Hylkema (NED) and CRS Racing's Harry Tincknell (Exeter) and Matias Laine (FIN).
In the afternoon session, drivers enjoyed some rare sunshine which also brought an increasing track temperature. Calado once again headed the timesheets at 1m 18.251s (102.40mph average) but was unable to surpass his previous best and choosing to conserve his tyres, ended his session after just 12 laps. Stoneman was second quickest being just 0.113s behind, followed by Oakes, Stevens, Webb and Manor Competition's David McDonald (Ewell, Surrey) who produced one of his strongest performances to finish sixth quickest for the session and seventh overall.
Commenting on his performance Calado said: "I'm very happy with how things have gone today. We opted to run with new tyres towards the end of the morning session which a lot of the other teams didn't. This, together with good track conditions, helped me set a good time that also turned out to be a full second quicker than last year's pole position."
The next official Formula Renault UK test takes place at Silverstone on 24th/25th March with the opening two rounds of the Championship at Brands Hatch Indy circuit on 4th/5th April.
