BOOST FOR FORMULA RENAULT WINTER CUP AS RENAULT SPORT EXPANDS SERIES
Renault Sport is to increase its 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Winter Series from four to six rounds to aid prospective drivers in securing the necessary licence to step-up to its National UK championship.
Norfolk's Snetterton circuit will provide the venue for the opening two rounds of the one-make series on Saturday, 6th November. This will then be followed by two double-headers at Pembrey circuit on Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th November to complete the remaining rounds. The race format will see one combined qualifying session followed by two races on each day.
Two semi exclusive test days, together with general testing in 4 x 40 minute sessions on the Friday beforehand, will also be provided by the two circuits to help teams and drivers in preparation for the single-seater series.
Commenting on the announcement, Championship Promoter Simon North said: "We're very excited about our plans for this year's Winter Series and to be able to announce the dates to teams and drivers. It's hoped that by increasing the number of rounds it will help new drivers to collect the six signatures they need in order to upgrade their licence from a National B to National A as required to make the step-up into the UK series and on to the TOCA package."
He added: "Whilst Renault Sport UK is not holding a Winter Cup for Clio competitors, there will be open saloon-car challenge races at Pembrey circuit on the 13th and 14th November which prospective 2011 Clio Cup drivers can take part in to try the one-make car in preparation for next season."
The news comes following Renault's announcement to renew its three-year rolling agreement to remain on the British Touring Car Championship support race package until at least 2013.
Last year's Formula Renault Winter Series saw CRS Racing's Harry Tincknell (Exeter) lift the title as well as Fortec Motorsport's Tom Blomqvist (Saffron Walden), son of rally legend Stig, become the youngest ever Formula Renault UK race winner at the age of just 15.
