Fresh start reaps instant results for Ollie Hancock
Reigning Formula Renault BARC champion Ollie Hancock enjoyed a morale-boosting weekend at Donington Park for round 3 of the Formula Renault UK Championship, starring in qualifying and securing a fine fourth place in race 2, his best result of the season.
After a frustrating start to his 2009 campaign, the BRDC Rising Star has taken the decision to run as an independent entry, with support from leading squad Hitech Junior, for the remainder of the season, having previously raced for Apotex Scorpio Motorsport in the opening two rounds.
Almost instantly the change saw significant improvement, with Hancock running solidly in the top ten during practice, before producing a superb performance in the weekend's second qualifying session, taking third on the grid on slick tyres in damp conditions.
A dry race 1 saw Hancock involved in the thick of the action from the start. Starting 18th, he quickly jumped three places and was then involved in a hectic, ever-changing midfield battle throughout the race. A solid 12th place at the chequered flag earned a fistful of crucial championship points.
The track was damp once again for race 2, where Ollie started from third. After enjoying a race-long battle with Lewis Williamson for the final podium spot, he finished fourth, just one-tenth of a second by the CRS Racing driver.
"I'm really happy with the improvement we've made this weekend and delighted to be fighting at the front after a difficult start to the season," Ollie said.
"I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the guys at Hitech Junior for their fantastic work and support and also to the Drivers Club and my other personal sponsors, without whom this change wouldn't have been possible."
