MULHOLLAND COMPLETES MANOR COMPETITION'S 2010 LINE-UP
Northern Ireland's Josh Mulholland has today been confirmed as Manor Competition's fourth driver signing for the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship -- the 20-year-old completing the Nottinghamshire squad's line-up alongside Thomas Hylkema, Will Stevens and Lewis Williamson.
During his first full season of car racing last year in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship, Randalstown-based Mulholland was a consistent front-runner and finished the campaign a highly creditable fourth overall with two victories, four other podiums and two pole positions.
Clearly, the move into the pressure-cooker environment of Formula Renault UK will mark a step-up in competitiveness for the championship newcomer. However, Mulholland's early pre-season testing promise has seriously impressed Manor Competition co-owner Tony Shaw.
"We're thrilled to bits to be able to confirm Josh as our fourth signing, he's done an absolutely cracking job in testing with us so far and we're certain he'll adapt well to the increase in competitiveness in Formula Renault UK", said Shaw, "Josh did a great job in BARC last year and his arrival in the Manor fold alongside Lewis, Will and Thomas gives us perhaps our strongest ever team. We're delighted."
The Co. Antrim racer, who is backed by Mulholland Scrap Metals, enjoyed a stellar karting career in Northern Ireland prior to his graduation to cars at the end of 2008. Claiming a whole host of national titles, in 2008 alone he was the Irish 'O' Plate Rotax Max Winner, the Rotax Max All Ireland Karting Champion, the Rotax Max Race of Champions Winner and the Irish Kart Grand Prix Winner.
For 2010, a brand new FR 2.0 car will feature in Formula Renault with unofficial timings already suggesting the package is substantially faster than its predecessor. Boasting a brand new chassis and aerodynamics, the car also features a seven-speed sequential gearbox with steering-wheel mounted paddle-shift and a more powerful engine, producing 210bhp.
Commenting on his graduation to Formula Renault UK, Mulholland said: "I'm very pleased to be joining Manor, it really is fantastic news. Last season in BARC went very well for me but we're under no illusions as to how challenging and competitive Formula Renault UK is. I'm 100% focused and committed and really looking forward to working and competing alongside Thomas, Lewis and Will."
Continuing testing in the UK during the coming week before heading off to Valencia in Spain, Manor will then join the rest of the Formula Renault UK teams at Brands Hatch in Kent for the first officially timed test of the 2010 pre-season on Tuesday, 2nd March, and Wednesday, 3rd March.
Three more officially timed tests will follow prior to the opening two rounds of the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship on 3rd/4th April at Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire.
