GOOD START TO OULTON WEEKEND FOR METCALFE
Jeremy Metcalfe has signalled his intent to make areturn to the podium during this weekend's ninth and 10th rounds of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Oulton Park Island Circuit after producing a welcome top three performance during testing at the 2.2-mile Cheshire venue earlier today.
The 19-year-old AKA Cobra star, currently sixth overall in the driver standings, is hungry for two rostrum results and after ending this afternoon's test session just three 10ths of a second shy of the top of the times, Jeremy has renewed confidence he will be able to kick-start his season this weekend.
Lapping with a best time of 1m 32.049 seconds (87.05mph) during the rain-affected first 45-minute session to go third fastest, the BillChaser-backed ace also posted the third quickest lap this afternoon albeit with a significantly quicker time of 1m 29.455 seconds (89.58mph) due to drier, but still damp, track conditions.
"The test went ok today", said the Fleet teenager, "We did some set-up work which seemed to pay off and everything felt pretty good so we're looking forward to the weekend now and getting back towards the front where we know we should be."
Oulton Park was, of course, the scene of two awe-inspiring performances from Jeremy last season whenhe achieved a brace of podiums from mid-grid starting positions and was subsequently named 'Driver of the Day' for both races.
With such good memories of the Cheshire track, the BRDC Rising Star is hopeful of an equally successful outing this weekend but he also knows the lack of dry running today could have an impact on the outcome of qualifying tomorrow.
"We have to see what happens", added the Loughborough University student,b^0x001cAt the moment the weather forecast looks as though it will be wet so in that case we think we should be fairly strong but if it's dry then everyone will be starting from a clean slate so nothing is certain at this stage. But I've been pretty happy with our pace today so that's given us some confidence."
As during the last race meeting at Croft, the Formula Renault UK competitors will only have one 20-minute qualifying session at Oulton Park in which to determine the grids for both rounds nine and 10. Qualifying will start at 12.25 tomorrow, Saturday, 23rd June, with the first of the weekend's races following at 17.05.
Round 10 will take place at 17.30 on Sunday, 24th June, and will be screened live on digital satellite and cable subscription channel Setanta Sports 1.
