CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDER METCALFE ON FORM AT BRANDS
Jeremy Metcalfe, 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finalist and BRDC Rising Star, ensured his Formula Renault UK pre-season test programme remained firmly on track at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit yesterday, Tuesday, 13th March, after posting the fourth fastest time overall.
The 18-year-old, from Fleet in Hampshire, completed just 10 laps during the first of the day's two sessions at the 1.2-mile Kent venue due to a complicated electrical problem with his car although he managed to post a quickest time of 44.519 seconds before the midday break.
During the afternoon, however, Jeremy knocked a full four 10ths of a second off his previous best with a time of 44.120 seconds (97.801mph). The truly important factor, along with his outright speed, was the consistency with which he lapped in and among the top four.
Once again the fastest of the AKA Cobra drivers, the BillChaser-backed star remains confident ahead of the Formula Renault UK Championship season and after ending today's test fourth overall on the timesheets, Jeremy is confident his team has a good set-up for the opening two rounds of the year at Brands Hatch in less than three weeks.
"We were consistently fast today which is obviously great news ahead of the first two rounds of the season at Brands",commented the Loughborough University student, "You always want to be among the top three or four and while it was good to end the day fourth fastest, the most important thing for me is that I was able to be consistently quick lap after lap."
The final official test of the Formula Renault UK pre-season takes place at Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire next Wednesday, 21st March, ahead of the first race meeting of the year at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on 31st March/1st April.
MSA British Race Elite place for Metcalfe?
Jeremy is also celebrating the news he has been named as one of 20 finalists who are vying for a place on the Motor Sports Association's new British Race Elite Programme which will comprise talented individuals from all disciplines of circuit racing.
From an original list of 86 drivers, the MSA has whittled this number down to 20 and those individuals selected will now go on to take part in an interview process with an independent judging panel in order to determine the final six 'Race Elite'.
Final judging is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 5th April, at the Colnbrook headquarters of the MSA with a panel including sportscar racer Oliver Gavin, GP2 and A1GP engineer Chris Gorne, former BTCC ace David Leslie and experienced Motorsport News journalist Matt James.
