EPTON REMAINS IN FORMULA RENAULT FOR BRANDS EVENT
Preston single-seater star David Epton is all set to continue in the Formula Renault UK Championship for the rest of the season after confirming he will remain in the Apotex Scorpio Motorsport camp for the 15th and 16th rounds of the campaign at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit next weekend, 18th/19th August.
David, a graduate accountant with Warton-based BAE Systems, had planned to make only his second ever appearance in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at the 1.2-mile Kent venue but after talks with chief sponsor Honeywell Aerospace and Apotex Scorpio team bosses Jon Pettitt and Tony Trevor, the 26-year-old will continue in Formula Renault UK.
While the Loughborough-based team is hopeful David's experience and ability will pay dividends with a couple of solid results, the weekend will also be very important for the 2005 Formula Palmer Audi Vice-Champion as Honeywell is inviting a large number of corporate guests to the British Touring Car Championship-supporting event.
"I'm really looking forward to Brands Hatch", said David, "it's good to be continuing with Apotex Scorpio and it'll be a very important weekend for both me and the team. We need to score good points for the entrant championship and I'm hoping we'll be able to put on a highly competitive showing for Honeywell's guests to enjoy."
With the short Brands Hatch Indy Circuit perhaps the most difficult of all the UK tracks to overtake on, even for a driver of David's ability, it's going to be absolutely crucial for the former Hampshire resident to qualify strongly in his Apotex Scorpio car next weekend.
"I think the Apotex Scorpio car will be good at Brands and I'm hopeful we'll have more pace than at Snetterton", he continued, "Qualifying will be absolutely critical due to the fact overtaking is so limited on the Indy Circuit, so we'll need to extract the maximum from the car, but I'm confident I can put a good lap together.
"I know the circuit well and have had good results there in the past. Actually, Brands Hatch is the scene of my last race victory when I competed in Formula Palmer Audi. It'd be fantastic to challenge for a podium next weekend, we know if the car is right we're capable of doing that, but a couple of top six results should definitely be achievable."
